The Biophotonics Group at the BC Cancer Agency (BCCA) develops optical tools for early detection and disease management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The imaging team is interested in the application of light for the early detection of epithelial cancers using <em>in vivo<\/em> optical imaging. The majority of cancers \u2013 about 80% in fact \u2013 originate in the epithelium, the thin layer of tissue that covers our body (skin) and lines our hollow organs (oral cavity, GI tract, lungs, for example). Carcinomas \u2013 cancers that originate&nbsp;in the epithelium \u2013 may&nbsp;spread&nbsp;to other parts of the body when one of the cancer cell&nbsp;passes through the basement membrane (invasion),&nbsp;penetrates a vessel of the circulatory system, and some time later, re-penetrates the vessel to form a&nbsp;secondary tumor (MET or metastasis).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1156\" height=\"564\" src=\"http:\/\/biophotonics.bccrc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/carcinogenesis-mod.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biophotonics.bccrc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/carcinogenesis-mod.jpg 1156w, https:\/\/biophotonics.bccrc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/carcinogenesis-mod-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/biophotonics.bccrc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/carcinogenesis-mod-768x375.jpg 768w, https:\/\/biophotonics.bccrc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/carcinogenesis-mod-1024x500.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/biophotonics.bccrc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/carcinogenesis-mod-500x244.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1156px) 100vw, 1156px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While traditional imaging modalities such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are able to image these organs from outside the body, the resolution is insufficient to detect cancer an its earliest stages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Optical imaging on the other hand has very high resolution but lacks the penetration depth to image organs from outside the body. Small endoscope-compatible imaging tools, however, can access these sites to provide detailed imagery at very high resolution. In fact, the penetration depth of optical coherence tomography (OCT) \u2013 one of the technologies of interest to our group \u2013 is sufficient to image the entire epithelial thickness and sub-epithelial structure and function in the stroma below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The figure below illustrates the resolution and penetration depth of the ultrasound (US) and&nbsp;magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with some up-and-coming research imaging modalities&nbsp;including optical coherence tomography (OCT), photoacoustic tomography (PAT), multiphoton microscopy (MPM) and confocal microscopy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"946\" height=\"655\" src=\"http:\/\/biophotonics.bccrc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/resolution-penetration-mod.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-338\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biophotonics.bccrc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/resolution-penetration-mod.jpg 946w, https:\/\/biophotonics.bccrc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/resolution-penetration-mod-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/biophotonics.bccrc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/resolution-penetration-mod-768x532.jpg 768w, https:\/\/biophotonics.bccrc.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/resolution-penetration-mod-433x300.jpg 433w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 946px) 100vw, 946px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the earliest changes due to a pre-cancer cancerous lesion are detectable in the epithelium and underlying stroma.
